    Building new boxes for an old DIY-speaker kit.

    The materials used are the same as in the blaster project;
    Annnnnd just for fun here's a size comparison of the new speaker next to the subwoofer we built not too long ago :) Maybe I should run these as a 2.1-set?
    Annnnnd just for fun...    		 Wooden parts for one speaker done. The front panel is sunk 6 mm so I can cover the whole speakers in the same black fabric as used in the subwoofer.

    It's that time of the year again.
    Close call but got it finished in time... Kinda. Need to re-do some things, but atleast it worked :) Special thanks to willek for putting it all together the night before vappu.

    I needed a compact test bench, so I built one.
    Updated the test bench, it now has some weather striping to keep the PSU and optical drive/HDD in place as well as mounting holes for the PSU. The fan is currently held in place with some zip ties, I still need to figure a good way to mount it. I need to move this thing around a lot to keep it safe from my cat, and having the parts mounted in makes moving it around a LOT easier.

Note the upside down standoffs. I figured this would make for the easiest installation. Just slap the motherboard on and it is not going to move anywhere. I also have thumb grommets for more secure mounting when necessary. Keep it simple ;)

    here's how it looked...    		 Peeled off the plastics from the aluminum sheets and started sanding/polishing the corner profiles. Pretty likely I'll end up painting them, but lets see.

    My trusty case that I\'ve slightly modified to match meet my requirements.
    P180BJSS getting some further modifications... this_can_only_end_well.jpg ;) And if someone doesn't get the image, I pulled the composite roof apart, damn that's some good glue/tape and there's lots of it.
    P180BJSS getting som...    		 Quick'n'dirty noise dampening mat installation in my trusty P180B. Bought a 50x100 cm piece of this mat from Motonet (cost 14 €, comes with glue). It's not gonna make a huge difference in the noise level, but I used it to block the excess holes of the case as well, so less dust will get in to the case. Took an hour to apply the stuff. If you're gonna make this to your case then there are a couple of things you should take into consideration: 1. Only place the stuff to places where it doesn't make installation or getting the side panels in place hard/impossible 2. You don't need to expose the whole glue side, just cut away parts of the paper backing and it'll stick firm enough. This way you can also remove the mat in the future if you wish to. 3. A sharp knife and scissors are needed to easily cut the stuff. You can also use isopropyl alcohol or such to remove the glue from the blade (or just get multiple knifes).

Also added a M4-threaded rod for extra support. Also ther upper HDD-cage and the external 3,5" place have been removed as they were useless. The original tri-cool fans are changed to quieter Nexus fans. (not installed in the image).

    Had to move the bottom fan of the P180B to the front panel as there's no room in between the PSU and the HDD cage. Was a terrible pain in the backside to make a hole for the fan, but now it's there. Lost the lower dust filter in the progress, but other than that the case appears to be stock.

There's a short piece of aluminum square tube glued to the door so now the DVD-drive can open the door when DVD-burning is finished instead of making annoying noises while trying.     quick project..
    Build new "ambilight"-bars from leds. Two bars with eight leds each. I've also upgraded the original led lights and now they also have eight of the same leds each. So now overall there are 32 leds lighting the desk area. Not really enough to LIGHT anything, but it gives a nice effect in the dark. All of these are also hooked up to the DIY-dimmer (see project). The leds are hidden inside an aluminum profile, just large enough for all the wiring.

    New Metku-office ;) ...    		 LED-thingys in use again. IMO they look better now than they did with the old table.. Cat doesn't seem to be so sure. Oh and ofcourse when you're sitting on the sofa, you can't see the leds, and there's the DIY dimmer if they seem too bright.

    Upgraded the lighting in the modding shack. The upper shot is taken with the old halogen spot light, the lower with the new fluorescent lamp. Can't believe the improvement. Probably gonna install another lamp in my bedroom as the yellow incandescent light and darkness make me sick. (Oh btw when taking these shots, the camera was forced at sunlight-WB)

More of the latter, to be honest :D Usually the table closer to the camera is used for metal working and has a bench drill on it and the one next to the wall is for electronics. This time though I was tweaking the bike so I cleaned the desk.

The speakers are Amphion Helium2. They are remarkably smaller than the old ones, so I'll need to build some sort of stands for the left and right as well. Vaihteeksi Jipan deskshotti...     When I fixed the alu-stand to the desk, I decided to add some wire hooks and manage the cables. There was a good place for a mains cord and a KVM switch behind the table. KVM is fixed with steelwire and karhuntarrat(tm) for maximal security. The cables don't seem too tidy, but they aren't either on the floor or on the desk, so I'm happy with the result.

    After all the dozens of cases I've reviewed, this is what it's come to :D I've just had the worst black-case-overdose ever, and wanted something subtle, boring and BEIGE (..and obviously missing the front bezel and side panel in this shot, because a box standard case form the 90's wouldn't really be too entertaining to look at). It's a random case complete with a Celeron-sticker and Phenom X6 1100 + HD6950-rig. For a mod I swapped the original drive cages for this: http://allthemods.com/userinfo.php?userid=8&id=6409 I'm yet to decide if I'm going to actually put some effort into this or try to find a the kind of beige case that I'm actually looking for and save the mods for that.
    After all the dozens...    		 Got it built. (...or actually willek did) Yours truly as size reference and just to show off my new Umbro-sweatpants. And how does it sound, I hear you ask? Well... Use your imagination. It's pretty loud.
    Got it built. (...or...    		 New subwoofer project coming up :D For size comparison there's a very sturdy 6,5" bass driver on the left (similar to what you might find inside good PC-speaker subwoofers). Sometimes size DOES matter.

The original idea was to use some zip ties or velcro to keep the new adapter in place, but actually it's exactly the right size so I can still use the original battery cover to hold it in place :) Flawless victory! It took me forever to actually start building this thing, but in the end it was just an hour or two to build it. This will save me so much cash in batteries :)

    I then cut two pieces of 6 mm acryl to act as the frame, and a piece of PCB to house a couple of capacitors. The caps are there to even out the peaks caused by the flash charging its own capacitor.
    I then cut two piece...    		 Modified my flash to use a transformer instead of six AA-batteries. Here's how it originally works, a holder for the batteries and a separate hatch that keeps the holder in place. If I wanted to use rechargeable batteries it would take two chargers to charge them all simultaneously, and I just didn't want to go there... Also I had no other use for the cells, and spending all the money for batteries and chargers just to feed a freebie flash seemed like total waste of money.
    Modified my flash to...    		 Lets start a bit of a community project here! Like some of you may or may not know, we already started abusing this Antec 902 case over at Assembly 2011, but now the party is over and I'm out of ideas. The stuff done so far: Flip the thing 90 degrees, so the rear is no floor and the front is the roof. Lift the motherboard tray and I/O-area 40 mm so there's room for cables. Cut a small window to the front/roof and flip the fans so the cooling makes sense. So not much done... Yet. Still needs the hooks for the tools in the upper part and a door for the bottom part, but other than that it's done. It's ugly as sin, but so much better than the old one...     Coming up ;) ...    		 I decided I need a new HDD-cage and got kinda carried away. 6 mm aluminum + 4 mm bitumen SHOULD be enough to prevent any vibrations... As for the mounting I've got two Antec silicone grommets on each corner. The cage alone weights about 350 grams and with all the four drives in place the total is over two kilograms (kitchen scale didn't show over 2000 g ;) )

    Started to build a rack for my amplifiers... The actual design has three layers, but as of now I only made one. Basically it's just something to make my desk less cluttered. It also has wheels for easier connecting of cables and cleaning.

This was the second mATX-setup solely built for case reviews and now as my sister needs anew rig, this will go to her.     SketchUp'd a bit and here's the result. Diameters are ~40x40x20 cm and it houses uATX mobo and normal ATX power supply. Also see the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mta42KT9G6s Shows how important it is to use components - it's so much easier to see and modify the design when you make all the stuff components of their own.
    SketchUp'd a bit and...    		 A triac controller that I've been planning for ages and am finally building. So far it has four channels, but I'm gonna make a second PCB there to house further 4 channels. The triacs I'm using are rated at 9 amp RMS current, which means that I can control 8*9=72 amps continuous current. On 12 V lamps this means over 800 Watts and if I made the system to handle 230 Volts (which I'm not, because all the insulations would be very, very bad PITA to make properly) it could handle about 16 kW power.... That's the theory at least :D More to come.
    A triac controller t...    		 Some ghetto drill press-addons. I was drilling holes to PCB for a project and didn't want the dust to get all over the place, which explains the red bin under the drill. Sometimes it would be handy to have this bin filled with water (wet sanding/polishing), but that would need some further enhancements to the design so that the drill wouldn't rust. Another test here is the LED-light taped to the side. First I thought of using two line-lasers, but drilling reflective stuff (metal) would be rather unpleasant if there were laser beams bouncing to my eyes. The lamp made it easier to see where the marks are, so I think I'm gonna go a bit further with this idea and modify the lamp to work with transformer and have a power switch.
    Some ghetto drill pr...    		 The original mounting bracket of the cooler snapped, so I had to make a new one. Kinda made me dislike the AM2 and its four mounting holes... S939 would've been easier as it has only two holes.

    The simpliest fancontroller in the world... The pcb is about 3 x too large right now, but I guess I'll add some connectors there, so there'll be no extra space. Specs are: Max. power handling (like it would matter) ~100 W Adjustment for minimum voltage/fan speed (makes sure the fans don't stop at any setting) When I add the connectors, I'll propably also add a trimmer for the max. speed. Cost for this thing is about 2 € (around three billion dollars with the current exchange rate)

    My humble modcorner which, as seen in the picture, isn't a corner at all. On top of the shelf there's my newest thing, an oscilloscope I got from school. Make building and repairing all kinds of electronics so much easier... And yes, there's a green CCFL in the tool-closet :)

    Funky.    		 Another shot showing the internals of the server. It's a hevily underclocked Pentium 3-system with only one fan and some sound dampening stuff on the walls. Fast enough to run my irssi and keeps cool'n'quiet. Besides cooling the HDD, the heatsink also adds some weight to it and makes it more quiet. I tried to take a picture showing the clearance between the processor and the PSU fan, but it didn't work out too well. There's maybe one millimeter between those :)
    Another shot showing...    		 My new PSU I salvaged from a rack of hospital equipments. I guess the rack had something to do with magnetic resonance imaging... 150 amperes should be more than enough for all the leds I ever wish to use! The plug on top of the unit is the original power plug. I don't know what model that is, but luckily the voltage range is right.

    Clean through the ba...    		 Here's my RC-runner made of two servomotors, a battery and a reciver and ofc Lego-wheels and some 1,5 mm aluminum sheet. It runs pretty fast at full charge and I've actually broken the fixings from both servos via driving it down from a table...
    Here's my RC-runner ...    		 My coilgun version X.0 X because I don't remember which version this actually is but this pic is taken from the very first tests with this version, so it's .0. Logical eh? :) I tried to make things safe this time and keep every high-voltage part hidden. Current specs for the capacitors are 200V 4800uF but I'm gonna upgrade that up to atleast 10000uF ( About 50 to 100J of energy)
    My coilgun version X...    		 I finally bought a drill press! Now I can mod again ;) Also some quality-cobolt-bits, they really rock! F the cheap bits! Drill cost about 60€ and the vice 10.. Bits so far also about 10€.
